Gears 5 - Bunker

I was the Technical Artist on Bunker. My role was to create shaders as well as optimising the map to ensure a locked 60 fps on base Xbox One and Xbox One X.


This was a challenging map to optimise due to the size of the map. Currently, Bunker is our largest and most open map. This meant draw calls were through the roof as well as being over our vertex shader budget. I used mesh instancing and cull distance volumes to reduce draws for the rubble. I also used HLOD's (Hierarchical Level of Detail) to further reduce Draw Calls. To reduce the vertex shader cost, we replaced a considerable amount of the OOB areas with Matte Paintings.
